What foods are high in fiber and protein?

Two of the most important things I look for in any food staple are fiber and protein. If you are looking to lose weight or tone up you need to start eating fiber and protein.

Foods high in fibre are fantastic for your body. They keep you full for a long time (always try and have a high fiber food for breakfast – whole wheat, porridge, etc), are great for your digestive system and are very healthy for your body overall.

Enough protein is also vital for a healthy diet. Foods high in protein are broken down by your body and then the protein is used to repair and build organs and muscles. Your body needs protein just to be able to function. Fiber is found in plenty of foods, but usually is abundant in lean meats such as chicken, turkey, beef, etc.

But what foods are high in both protein and fiber?

Well the truth is not many foods do contain both. Infact no animal products do at all! Some plants/veg do contain both. Nuts and seeds are a very popular source of protein and as they also contain fiber, so you could consider them super foods. Beans and peans also contain both – and who doesn’t like beans on toast!

As you can see, there is not a massive selection, and to be honest nut and seeds work much better as a snack as part of a healthy diet than as a meal substitution. Instead why not try mixing together foods high in in protein (tofu, meat etc) with foods high in fiber (brown rice, whole wheat bread) and get the best of both worlds.

Don’t forget your fruit and veg so you get your vitamins and your body has all it needs to function properly.
